Tomato Kara Chutney | Thakkali Kara Chutney Recipe
I have made this chutney for so many times than i can imagine. It is one of my family's all time favorite, even today morning i made this. Then i realised that i haven't posted it yet in my blog. I made it took pictures months back, but it somehow stayed back in my drafts. Now i took it out and revealing it to you. If you try it once, i am sure you would keep on making it again and again.
Tomato kara chutney or Tomato chutney is one of the popular chutney variety originated from Indian Sub-continent. Mostly it accompanies with Dosa and idly. Some restaurants it is served as side dish for paniyaram. It can be made with or without onions. The street side mostly provide Tomato Kara chutney to their
customers.

Ingredients for Thakkali Kara Chutney
Delicious tomato chutney is made using tomatoes, dry red chillies, garlic and chana dal.
Tomatoes - 5 large chopped (Good ripe tomatoes are better to balance its sourness with spiciness from chillies)
Chana dal - this gives good aroma when toasted and adds thickness to the chutney.
Dry red chillies - when roasted it adds smoky taste to the chutney.
Garlic - good for aroma and taste
How to Make Tomato Kara Chutney
- Heat oil in a kadai. Fry dry red chilli till golden. Remove to a plate. In the same oil, fry garlic cloves till golden and remove it to the same plate.
- Now in the same oil add the tomatoes, tamarind and cook till it turn completely mushy. Add in salt and sugar and mix well.
- Now take garlic, chilli, tomatoes in a blender and make into a smooth paste. Add water if needed.
- Transfer this to a bowl.
- Now make tempering. Heat oil in a kadai. Add in mustard and urad dal. Add asafoetida and let it sizzle for a 30 seconds. Now add in curry leaves and fry it for 30 sec.
- Pour this over the chutney and mix well.
- Serve this with idly or dosa.

Ingredients
- Oil - 2 tblspn
- Dry Red Chilli - 4 to 5
- Garlic - 10 cloves
- Tomatoes - 5 large chopped
- Salt to taste
- Sugar - 1 tsp
- Tamarind Pulp - 1 tsp or 1 small piece tamarind
- For Tempering:
- Oil - 1 tsp
- Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
- Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - ½ tsp
- Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - a pinch
- Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Instructions
Heat oil in a kadai. Fry dry red chilli till golden. Remove to a plate. In the same oil, fry garlic cloves tll golden and remove it to the same plate.

Hi Aarthi...I tried dis recipe....but it was so tangy...how to fix tanginess???.... If I skipped tamarind paste it might be perfect... I think so...
