The 16 best cake shops and cake bakeries in Key West (2024)

Moondog Cafe is a quaint café in Whitehead Street that offers separate menus for breakfast and lunch/dinner, as well as drinks. The atmosphere at the café is welcoming and friendly, making it a perfect spot to relax after a busy day. The wide variety of vegan desserts on display is a bonus, making this cafe a great place to stop by if you're looking for some sweet treats.

Wonderful little cafe directly beside the Hemingway house! My daughter and I ate lunch here two days in a row after touring the house and both times were great. Really neat atmosphere with colorful murals of local attractions. Our first visit was the best because we got the cozy little corner window seat. We had the barbecue chicken pizza and it was delicious and great service by the wait staff both days. Highly recommend for a great local place for lunch!

This place was awesome! We wanted to find the perfect spot with breakfast options all day. This place has the best croissant egg sandwich, breakfast burrito and omelets! They have Crazy Cuban Queen coffee and fresh baked pastries. Pedro was amazing and we appreciated his service and attention to detail. He made our lunch even better!!We highly recommend and the lunch items looked amazing also. We will definitely be back!

A perfect out of the way restaurant located next to the Hemingway House. We had planned to try different breakfast restaurants in the area but found ourselves returning every morning for more "wonderful". Lunch and dinner were equally amazing and we can wait to visit again on our next trip to Key West!

In the Keys for our anniversary. Came here for brunch. Seated outside, shaded, and waited on immediately. Got the Moondog Mary to start with. One of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve had. Had a little kick but not overpowering. We had the Mahi sandwich which was very tasty. Carrot cake for dessert was a huge slice. I’m so/so on the cake. It had a good taste and was very moist, but had a different taste from what I was expecting. Overall, a great place for lunch. Would come back here in the future. Nice clean restrooms.

It’s a bit overpriced but great food!Key lime pie the vegan fun cake and the blueberry bread pudding cheesecake amazed every person in my family. The soup very delicious but not even the a bowl my tuna poke also arrived very small portions. My 2 sons both got burgers they loved every bite!

When we entered the front door, my eye immediately went to a glass display case filled with colorful and unique desserts; making the choice of dessert a tough one 😅. After having key lime pie at another location that claimed to have the best in Key West, I had to have a slice to compare and it did not disappoint. I knew at the first bite this was the best key lime pie I ever had in my life. The service and ambiance were a five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ with creativity and color throughout the establishment. As an artist, these are all things I can appreciate. My girlfriend ordered the raspberry cheesecake and was in love with the presentation as well and enjoyed every bit. This is a hidden jewel 💎 and I’d highly recommend Moondog Cafe to anyone looking for a quality food experience. You’re welcome! 😇😉

Located just down the street of Hemingway’s house, this small cafe has excellent food and desserts. I had the Frenchmen burger with a side of truffle fries and it was incredibly juicy and flavorful. We also had the key lime pie as well as the basque cheesecake and both were excellent. Definitely in contention for the best key lime pie in Key west. Plus, the service was fantastic and the waitress was incredibly attentive. Definitely would recommend for a nice casual evening dinner.

Alan M — Google review

We stopped in for a quite afternoon bite to try their key lime pie. We heard it was one of the best in Key West and we would have to agree! Absolutely delicious! Loved the vibe of the cafe and the mural was beautiful!

Our dining experience at Moondog Cafe and Bakery was delightful and satisfying. The food was delicious. As a vegan, I highly recommend this place, especially because the menu offers a variety of options so that groups of people with diverse culinary preferences all have interesting and creative choices. I had the avocado and veggie salad with blackened tofu. It was packed with flavor. My mother had the grouper picatta (with white wine, tomato, capers, garlic and butter, homemade gnocchi and grilled asparagus). She loved it. For dessert, we enjoyed their vegan key lime pie, which was light, tangy, and creamy (but not too sweet). The service was excellent. Our server Shawn was charming, attentive, and efficient. He answered our questions and checked on us several times. We plan to eat there again.

There is nothing to not love about the Moondog Cafe, from attentive servers, to freshly made juices for your mimosas, an in-house bakery, and a delightful food menu. You can't go wrong. Not on Duval Street, but still when we were leaving, there was a line to get in. Recommend missing the brunch hours, but not skipping this restaurant. My favorite thing was the fact that it is all about the history of Key West. So besides a great meal, you learn a few things.

wow! this is the perfect café! 1st class bakery, bar, great espresso, outdoor tree shaded sidewalk patio , and indoor dining in really an adorable space. Kudos to the owners and operators here.very close to Hemingway house, one block or so away, and far more peaceful than the main drag of bars and restaurants

Absolutely one of the best places to eat in key west! Large portions always food left for a to-go box . Variety of lunch and breakfast choices as well as espresso, alcoholic drinks, juice, tea soda options. Friendly and professional staff that treat tourists with respect and make for a all around great experience. And by all means don't forget to try a bakery item some of the best & freshest pastries and pies !

If you want a delicious place to eat that has a little bit of everything on the menu, this is the place! Fresh, healthy, and so yummy! Every single item on the menu sounds incredible and every dish we saw walk by our table to other guests looked absolutely delicious. I got the avocado toast - incredible. My husband got one of their sandwiches, also incredible! We couldn’t decide between an epic breakfast, a delicious burger, incredible pizza or sandwich… you honestly can’t go wrong here!Second time visiting Moondog Cafe and everything has been amazing each time. There was a slight wait (15-20min) but it’s worth the wait! The restaurant was busy today, I don’t think we saw any staff members stop moving the entire time we were there. You can tell the staff work well together, we admired their efficiency and upbeat attitude despite being busy.I’d 100% recommend. I wish we had a Moondog Cafe at home!

I was recommended to this place and excited to try it, but I was disappointed. The menu had so many great options to choose from, especially all-day breakfast. So many things sounded good, but I decided on the blackened shrimp tacos. Although they were good, the tortillas fell apart when you picked them up. Everything kept falling out, and your hands were covered in sauce. It is not enjoyable when you can't eat the food you want and how it should be eaten. Another person at the table ordered a burger and asked for the patty to be cooked well done. Patty arrived medium rare. At that point, it would have taken too long to send it back and have it recooked, so they just powered through. Everyone else enjoyed their dishes. The decor on the inside is super cute. The restaurant as a whole is charming. Next time, I will order something else. Also, it wasn't too enjoyable when all the people sitting outside had to cram in cause it started raining, and the patio covering was pouring water into the seating area. Got too packed and had people right on me while I was trying to eat. You can't control the rain, but maybe a better covering would help.

My family and I stopped here and LOVED the food! We got a variety of items and appetizers and loved all of it! We were seated immediately and service was great. We sat on the deck and were so comfortable. DEFINITELY recommend stopping by the bakery counter on the way out to get some of their treats. All were delicious!

We were a group of 15 visiting Key West, and were able to be seated at 5:30 easily on a Tuesday. Everything was wonderful, from the kindness and wonderful service of Guada, who helped us throughout, to all the staff as we bought their super cool shirts and ordered desserts from the unbelievable selection of sweets. Everyone of us got food that was so delicious and exceeded our expectations. The portions are beyond generous, and the selection on the menu was so dynamic. I also loved their alt music, murals, and whole aesthetic. Even the clean bathrooms were awesome! A wonderful and memorable dining experience for all of us!

This was our first time visiting 🌴Key West🌴and we found this little place along Whitehead Street... It seemed to be a pretty popular place because there was a lot of people there eating...There was no room for us to sit inside so we chose to sit outside and eat..it is connected to the cafe..with painted walls that are colorful...and fans offer a nice breeze...along with some plants to make the setting comfortable while you eat..The setting was beautiful inside and out... I had those smoked salmon Benedict with a side of potatoes and Cajun shrimp🍤 it was warm and delicious the food was excellent at a reasonable price for🌴Key West Florida🌴the service was good as well with only about 10-15 min wait on our food...If you visit make sure you try the key lime pie there...It was the first time trying real key lime pie🫒for me and it was so delicious.

The food is amazing at this place. My husband and I found this place by accident. This is definitely a hidden jewel in Key West. Very cozy, quaint restaurant. They make the best hot lattes! They also have a bakery with all kinds of desserts, including the famous key lime pie. We ended up eating where twice while we were visiting Key West, once for breakfast and one time for dinner. Very impressed with the service and the food! Try their red and white sangia! This is definitely a stop when visiting Key West. We will come back here to eat again!

Wife and I went for breakfast. She had Quiche which she said was the best she ever had anywhere!I had eggs, sausage, home fries and a bagel. Food was good but sausage bagel and home fries were not hot! Actually luck warm!Service was great! I like that anyone can help and you don’t have to find your waiter for assistance.I would definitely return but would ask that my breakfast food be hot!

Shakshuka was delicious. A little spicy in a good way. Right size portion so you’re not stuffed for six hours. The shrimp Benedict was also delicious. Shrimp were nicely seasoned. Even the potatoes were nicely seasoned. The back room lacks a little charm but the front dining area and outside areas are great. Would totally recommend.

This was the best experience & best food we had on our trip to Key West. Our waiter, Jack, was absolutely incredible. We had the Mahi sandwich, the steak tacos, the spinach artichoke dip, & the mimosas. We would highly recommend & we will be back when we come back to Key West. This is a must on your trip.

We ordered an array of desserts and coffees. We enjoyed everything we got. The Key Lime pie was wonderful (we also bought a full pie to go.) We also really enjoyed the special of the day which was a Mexican chocolate cake. The thing we liked the least was the rum cake and it was still very tasty. We had the best, friendliest service. We will definitely visit again.

Really enjoyed our time at Moondog. Located right on the street, easy to get to, and scenic with its outdoor seating options. We actually went 2 days in a row. You need to get there early to avoid the rush and waiting. Our first day we went at 9 AM, and the second at 730 AM, and it's a huge difference. Food, service, and atmosphere were all really good, with many food options to choose from, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc. We had the breakfast tacos on day one, then we had brioche french toast and salmon bagel on day 2. Everything was excellent. You will pay as the prices are hefty, and be ready to spend $60 for breakfast for 2. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would go back again.

During our visit to Moondog Cafe & Bakery in Key West, we had the opportunity to try a variety of dishes, each offering a unique taste experience. The café has a welcoming atmosphere and an extensive menu that caters to diverse tastes.Appetizers:We started with the Spinach & Artichoke Dip and were thoroughly impressed. The creamy blend of spinach and artichokes was perfectly seasoned and served with crispy crostini. This dish was a delightful beginning to our meal. Additionally, the Truffle Fries were a hit, offering a satisfying crunch with a rich truffle flavor. The Avocado Caprese was fresh and flavorful, featuring ripe avocados paired with juicy tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze.Main Courses:For our main dishes, we had mixed experiences. The Quiche Lorraine tasted good, with a nice balance of flavors from the bacon, cheese, and custard filling. Unfortunately, it was slightly burned, which detracted from the overall enjoyment. Similarly, the Roasted Mushroom, Truffle & Fontina Pizza had potential, but it was overcooked and the crust was burnt, which made it less enjoyable. On a brighter note, the Blackened Local Mahi Tacos were delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the accompanying toppings added a refreshing crunch and zest that complemented the mahi perfectly.Dessert:To finish off our meal, we indulged in the Key Lime Pie. This dessert was the highlight of our visit. The pie had a perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, with a creamy texture and a delightful graham cracker crust. It was a quintessential taste of Key West and left us wanting more.Service:However, the service at Moondog Cafe & Bakery could use some improvements. Throughout our visit, we noticed a lack of attentiveness from the waitstaff. We found ourselves looking around for someone to ask for lemon slices and sour cream, as the waiters did not follow up to see if we needed anything, and for some reason our waitress was upset and not friendly. This oversight slightly marred an otherwise enjoyable dining experience.Overall Experience:While there were some inconsistencies in the preparation of certain dishes and room for improvement in service, Moondog Cafe & Bakery offers a diverse menu with several standout items. The appetizers and desserts were particularly memorable, and the café’s ambiance added to the overall positive experience. We would recommend giving it a try, especially for the Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Blackened Mahi Tacos, and Key Lime Pie.

I was craving something sweet later in the evening. I googled what was nearby and this place popped up. It was less than a 1/4 from where I was staying. The selection was plentiful. Portions are larger in my opinion and truly weren't as overpriced as I was prepared for.I'm not much of a lime girl but the key lime pie grabbed my attention so I order it. It was so good!! Perfectly balanced with the thick crust and meringue. It was delicious! Here's a secret - after 8pm, select bakery goods are half priced 🙌🏼Great way to sample a variety without breaking the bank. The setup is quite adorable!

Definitely worth a stop while you're in Key West, whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a mouthwatering pastry. My friend got the bread pudding and said it was one of the best she's ever had. The croissant for the egg sandwich was airy and buttery. We stopped the first time for a pastry, the second time to dine in for breakfast, and if we would've had more time in the area, we probably would have gone back again to try some of the other items.

Honestly this was the best food and experience we had during our visit! Our waitress was fantastic. (I hate that I don’t remember her name)I had the BBQ Chicken Pizza - the best pizza I’ve ever eaten! Our son had the John Wayne Burger. I loved watching an 18 year old boast about how great his food was and that the BBQ sauce beat any sauce he has ever had. His friend had the BBQ pork tacos and again 5 stars. The Truffle Mac and Cheese was loved as well.Don’t forget to try the desserts!! They were all winners! Definitely put this restaurant as a must visit while in Key West!!

My wife and I were in the mood for some late-night dessert and heard this place had some of the best in Key West. We sat at the counter, and the bartender gave us a few great recommendations. We ended up trying the key lime pie and the seasonal cheesecake. Both were fantastic, and we would highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a delicious treat.

Moondog Cafe in Key West offers a laid-back atmosphere with exceptional breakfast choices. The aroma of fresh-baked goods is inviting, and the pastries are a must-try. The breakfast menu, varied and flavorful, includes creative takes on classic dishes. The highlight is their cocktail menu, which complements the meal with unique, morning-friendly drinks. Overall, Moondog Cafe is a Key West must-visit for a relaxing and delicious breakfast experience. Five stars!

OMG sooooo good. Cool spot with unique menu and outstanding baked goods. Very reasonably priced for Key West. I was trying to be good and stay on my diet so I wasn't going to eat but we passed the bakery counter on the way in and everything looked so delicious, but I held strong. My sons pancakes were really good and my wife's shrimp benedict was outstanding. Walking past the bakery counter on the way out was just too much and i grabbed a creme brulee croissant and cinnamon roll for the drive back up the keys. Neither disappointed 🤩 Definitely on my try again list next time we visit Key West

Highly highly recommend. One of the best restaurants we've been to this year. Friendly, professional service from all the staff. Nice ambiance, great menu with delicious to food, which is prepared so quickly and comes out looking beautiful. The dessert cabinet makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. We chose the key lime pie, but they also had basque cheesecake, and a bunch of other cakes that looked amazing. Thanks to our server, Arai

Moondog cafe was such a fun dining spot we stumbled upon in Key West. We enjoyed their brunch. I had the Blackened Shrimp Benedict and it was AMAZING! Service was also very nice. I also loved that they used set calling cards for those waiting so that everyone knew exactly when it was their turn. Very clever and something we had never seen before!

Before coming to Keywest I searched where is the best Keylime Pie i can find. This was one of the 3 restaurants that I saw recommended by different influencers. I gave it a try because it seemed more authentic to me. I was so right, the Key lime pie they have make me think to come back in Key West again. Even we tried their other pastries and those were delicious as well. I just loved the place, hope I had more food over there. If I ever visit Key West again, there is no way I don’t come back to this place. A nice little spot to get a good bite to eat. Key Lime pie was the star of course. Menu was decent and we had the tacos which we enjoyed. Service was friendly and helpful. Key Lime pie was terrific and definetly worth a try. The rest of the baked goods looked amazing and I would go back just to try those as well.

Perfect for brunch! We only waited 20 minutes despite the long line. The staff is friendly and welcoming to two- and four-legged customers alike. We opted for outdoor seating because of our pup, and the weather was perfectly pleasant. Everything in the menu seemed appetizing. We opted for the classic Benedict and the blackened shrimp Benedict with two macchiatos and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Everything was served fresh and tasted delicious. The orange juice was exceptionally noteworthy. The staff was friendly, attentive, and did not rush our meal, which we appreciated. The wild chickens and people watching added fun elements to the ambiance. We did not order any of the bakery goods this time, but they looked delicious.

Excellent place and service! We enjoyed the mushrooms, spinach omelets w white only eggs and another with regular eggs, they Come with croissants (I would rec to warm before serving). Also we had the delicious pancakes. The coffee was excellent.

Moondog Cafe was recommended by a local resident. It did NOT disappoint!! My friend had the Big Poppa Burger and I tried the Shrimp and Bacon White Pizza. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Drinks were light and refreshing still with a bit of a kick. Danielle was our server and she was awesome? So friendly and gave us ideas of things to do during our visit. She also provided great service!!! Will have to stop by again before we leave. 🥳

5/22/24 - What a find! We had lunch at another restaurant and when we asked how good their key lime pie was the server honestly told us it was pretty good but she'd go to Moondog if we wanted the best key lime pie. We're so glad she did. I've had a lot of key lime pie and the piece I had at Moondog was definitely one of, if not the best. The pie was tart with the sweet merengue perfectly complementing it. My wife got a blueberry bread pudding cheesecake that was delicious but very filling. There were several other wonderful looking baked items that we weren't able to try. We'll make it a point to return to Moondog Cafe anytime we're in Key West. My challenge will be not getting the key lime pie every time so I can try other delicious creations.

Phil D — Google review

I absolutely love Moondog and have come here multiple times. The burger I had was perfect and filling. A friend that came with me was gluten free, and even her burger without a bum was delicious. The atmosphere is perfect, outside and inside.
